2022 Summer Intern: Cait
Cait Larkin did her CET study abroad this past summer in Taiwan. Although she intended to study in mainland China, ongoing COVID considerations made that impossible. Fortunately, she still had a very productive remote internship, interacting regularly with our team here in Shanghai through WeChat, email, and video chat.
Like Tom last summer, Cait spent time working on the Chinese Vocabulary Wiki, but also helped out with various marketing efforts, study materials testing, and teacher assessments.
Cait described her internship experience like this:
I never expected that while studying abroad in Taiwan I would be virtually-interning with AllSet Learning, a company based in Shanghai, but I’m so glad I did! I am part of the Chinese Flagship Program, and decided to strengthen my Mandarin skills in Taipei through the CET program due to the internship component, which was highly recommended by previous alumni. After hearing about AllSet Learning through CET, I knew that was where I wanted to intern.
I was nervous about the virtual aspect of this internship, as well as my intermediate Chinese skills. However, John, Ma Laoshi, and everyone else I met were so welcoming, encouraging, and patient. The online aspect (given the current Covid situation) was neat as well - I got to experience so many different coffee shops in Taiwan! As a Chinese and Linguistics double-major student, working with John was greatly beneficial to my studies. I was given tasks that challenged me, and I actually felt like I was contributing to the company.
One of my main tasks was editing and writing tweets for their social media, and through that I’ve learned and reviewed new grammar and vocabulary terms. In addition, working with Ma Laoshi was so fun and gave me opportunities to speak completely in Mandarin. I also test-ran lessons with new teachers - this allowed me to meet exceptional people and learn new grammar points. I am so thankful to have interned at AllSet Learning and met such amazing people.
謝謝大家幫助我提高我的中文水平!:)
We’ll miss you as our intern, Cait, but we know this is not the end! Hopefully you’ll make it to Shanghai eventually.
On this same blog, Cait also wrote for us about using the Chinese Vocabulary Wiki and about her experiences with both simplified and traditional characters.
